2009 LIFEGUARD OLYMPICS SUMMARY

Local Competition Results

The northern Outer Banks local Lifeguard competition was held over the course of three evenings; one in Corolla, one in Nags Head, and one in Kill Devil Hills. The three events' scores were then tallied for a final result of Corolla placing first with 497 points,
ahead of Nags Head (269.75 points), then Kill Devil Hills (188 points), then Surf Rescue (Duck and Southern Shores) with 73.25 points. Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue elected not to participate this year.

Regional Competition Results

Corolla Ocean Rescue then sent a team to the regional competition in Myrtle Beach, where they competed against Eastern seaboard teams from Virginia Beach down to the southern tip of Florida. Corolla won FIRST PLACE in the 'B' division (‘A’ division is for agencies with more than 50 employees, ‘B’ division is for agencies with less than 50 employees). Corolla brought home a total of 22 medals (first through third) with 11 of those being gold. Our Division Chief Sylvia Wolff won 8 first places in her age group! Corolla brought home medals in the run-swim-run, paddle-board, swim rescue race, 2-K run, the surf ski, the line-pull, the rescue relay, flags, the 4x100 relay, the surf swim, and the iron-guard. It was a fantastic event, and all competing guards did an outstanding job representing Corolla Ocean Rescue.

We had an incredible group of athletes on staff this year, and although only a few traveled to the Regional Competition, their trip wouldn’t have been possible without those who stayed back in OBX to watch the water!

WAY TO GO COROLLA!
